Story
At Google’s recent ‘Made By Google 2022’ event, the Google Pixel Watch was released, and the Pixel Tablet was announced. These two devices are new additions to the Pixel family and are Google’s way of asserting itself in these markets.
Pixel Watch
Although we already had an idea of what the Pixel Wach would look like, the official release was at Made by Google ‘22. The watch is curved, with rounded edges and a scratch-resistant cover glass. Unlike lots of wearable tech that require input from a connected device, Google made sure that Pixel Watch users could view notifications and carry out basic tasks straight from the watch. Features like heart rate tracking were made to be as precise as possible, and Emergency SOS, along with Fall Detection were added to ensure the safety of users. Pixel Watch buyers got 6 months of Fitbit Premium for free and insights into well-being and sleep quality are readily available on the Fitbit app.
Pixel Tablet
The Pixel Tablet was announced at Made by Google ‘22, and we learnt a bit more about this device. The Pixel Tablet is another part of the ecosystem Google is trying to create with all of its Pixel devices. Powered by Tensor G2, machine learning was given a big boost on this device and ‘Material You’ offers lots of customization options for users. One of the main talking points regarding the Pixel Tablet is how it can be paired with a charging speaker dock, enabling it to be a useful assistant tool. The tablet, when paired with the speaker dock allows for hands-free help from Google Assistant and control over smart home devices.

My Take
I think Google is making a big push to create an interconnected ecosystem for its users. In the keynote of the event, several times the presenters mentioned how seamlessly these separate devices, along with the pixel smartphones, interact with one another. And how much of a link there is between each Google device. With time and more improvements made to each device, I think Google has the potential to create an ecosystem reminiscent of the one Apple currently has, making it even more of a challenge for users to switch from Pixel to a separate device, with a separate operating system.
Overview
The Google Pixel Watch starts at $349, while the Pixel Tablet is due to be released in 2023.
